Business Interface's origin as a creation of the American Business community directly reflects the organization's business-driven focus toward addressing the policies, strategies and practices of hiring, retaining and promoting underserved populations.Through the work of its Employment and Education Centers embedded in the local community, Business Interface functions as the link between businesses with jobs, underserved populations looking for employment and servicing organizations with resources to assist the target population. 

Demand-side Intermediary Model
Our intermediary model draws from research and experience in the areas of employing the severely hard-to serve, employment barriers faced by this population and the role of intermediaries in the workforce development system. Demand-side refers to the development of recruitment, training and placement strategies that are responsive to the workforce needs of the business community. In other words, candidates are prepared for the jobs that are in demand. As a demand-side intermediary, we work with community provider organizations to help increase candidates’ marketability for the jobs identified through our business clients. The overall package of services is intended to address employers’ reservations in hiring the target population, while at the same time provide viable economic opportunity for the participants that allow compensation well above minimum wage.

Our Centers and Staff
Currently, Business Interface operates in the cities of Baltimore, MD and Newport News, Va. Each Center is staffed with personnel that perform distinct functions in support of implementing our services in the community:

Business Resource Consultant (BRC) - develops employer outreach plans targeting high-growth businesses. When a potential employer is identified, the BRC meets with the employer to conduct an extensive business needs analysis with survey tools designed to capture specific data. The information is the first step in the employer/candidate match and becomes the basis for skill development and training related to the labor needs of the employer.

Human Resource Consultant (HRC) - provides pre-employment services. The HRC builds key relationships with a variety of service providers and public agencies that are embedded in the community. Through these organizations, the HRC is able to recruit participants and identify supportive services required during the transition into the workforce. Close relationships are maintained with housing, social services and transportation agencies, One-Stop Career Centers, community- and faith-based organizations, and other groups.

Retention Specialist (RS) provides post-employment support to the employer and participant.This is to ensure that challenges such as literacy, childcare, housing, transportation, behavior issues, training needs, and other barriers identified during the transition process do not hinder the client's employment success. The RS serves as an informal counselor, mentor and emergency services contact to help mediate any foreseeable disruptions in the placement relationship.

Workforce Development Trainer (WDT) - The WDT is an experienced educator/trainer that delivers job readiness, occupational and basic education courses to customers participating as part of Business Interface’s training and job placement programs. Training programs are designed to equip students with an industry recognized skill set and to help improve their marketability in the workforce.
